Syria to Support Anti - Terrorism nytimes.com

I don't know quite how the Anti part slipped into that headline.

With its close ties to Iran and the Lebanese guerrilla group Hezbollah, as well as its recent rapprochement with Iraq, Syria's support for the U.S.-led campaign is crucial.

U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell told The Associated Press Tuesday his country was ``exploring opportunities to cooperate'' with Damascus in the fight against terrorism. At the same time, the State Department has kept Syria on a list of seven nations sponsoring terrorism.

Asked to comment on an apparent contradiction in U.S. position, al-Sharaa said: ``I can understand the American position for a new administration. This list has been there for a long time.''

``Of course we do not believe in it,'' he added. ``We are totally against terrorism.''

Of course they are totally against terrorism. And they're shocked, shocked! that such events ever occur. Round up the usual suspects.

Everybody has been given notice and can cure their ways from now on. Those who don't will pay.
