Leningrad!! then hitler says from hq (in the rear), 'oh we're not taking leningrad, we're not taking moscow; we're going to take out kiev. so his armored troops - all disappointed at the decision - lose their only real chance at taking those cities that year. the germans send their lead armor in the north - armor which had miraculously been defeating vast soviet formations in the campaign through the baltic states down to the pripyets. the jumpoff point for the kiev battle was smolensk. from there some fairly large german armored formations swept south, behind (east of) the pripyets. they took kiev when they met up with other axis forces attacking from the south. it was something like 500,000 russian prisoners, right there in and around the encircled kiev. 1942 was another story and there, moscow was not to be talked about in hq. no, hitler wanted the oil of the caucasus. look where that got him. he foolishly threw an army into street fighting at stalingrad when those troops should have never been near the city. there were too many other things which needed to have been done. getting back to the point - using hitler as an example: it looks like a guy - in this case hitler - has a lot of control, then he just loses it. it happens to all of the egos. to paraphrase 'whom G-d wishes to bring low He first drives mad...' footnote: speaking of the czechs; since this is the WAR thread this is an interesting story. when the british and french handed the czechs over to hitler, what they did was get benes - the czech 'president' - to sign away the sudetenland. prior to this, hitler sent gangs across the border into sudentenland with the purpose of having them stir up riots and print pamphlets and such. the sudetenland was mostly ethnic germans. so benes signs away the sudetenland and chamberlin waves a paper and says, 'peace in our time' and within 1 year or so the rest of czechoslovakia is occupied; and about a year after that france is occupied by the germans and britain is on its knees. when germany invaded france, they had available to them tanks from the captured czech factories. i have this 'marshall cavendish' book from the '70s. it's on axis armor of world war 2. it shows all of the german, italian, and japanese tanks. the german part is extensive; the japanese and italians just a few pages apiece. in the introduction it mentions that, when the germans attacked france on 10 may 1940 there were 10 german armored divisions. 4 of those were outfitted entirely with czech-manufactured tanks. in 1938 in the sudetenland the czechs had fortifications facing germany which were comparable to the maginot line. now before you laugh at that, realize that the maginot line was not attacked directly by the germans, so it didn't - in and of itself - fail in the defense. where the french and british failed in 1940 was in letting the germans through the ardennes - the same locale where the germans attempted their famous, 'battle of the bulge' just over 4 years later. in 1940 hitler succeeded with a well-planned - and lucky - attack. through those same woods in 1944 the attack was ill-planned and unlucky. as to the 2nd world war on a whole; stalin barely came out of that thing alive. by the way, he and tukachevsky had a history going back to around 1920... andy
