willcousa, <<<I went to work for the leading builder of autopilots in 1964. We had an automatic landing system by 1966. It is used routinely on carriers where the landing surface can rise and fall by several stories from wave to wave. The equipment is in large commercial aircraft. Control from a place other than the flight deck is probably not available on commercial aircraft but I believe that awacs planes can assume control of military aircraft. >>>

It sounds like proof of concept and prototype are done. It is only a matter of Cost/Benefit or ROI. If commercial liners are hi-jackproof, there would be no need for the military to shoot down a commercial aircraft with up to several hundred civilian travelers. It would also help to prevent any other WTC incidents, and provide travelers, residents of large structures, or gathering place a sense of safety.

It may not be a total solution to prevent terrorist activity, but for a few $B's it closes the door on a terrorist concept that has wrecked tremendous havoc.

Ref <but I believe that awacs planes can assume control of military aircraft >

The AWACS can vector a fighter plane on to its target, presumably an enemy plane. This allows the fighter plane to turn off its radar, and thus make it less visible to the enemy, and allows a stealthier intercept. The active radar on the fighter plainly gives away the position of the fighter, and is turned on only when the enemy is very close.

However this does not allow landing and other trickier aspects of flying. The AWACS is merely programming the autopilot of the interceptor aircraft.
