Yes, the explanation I divined from the dictionary was ultimately the naval derivation, which was offered also in some material Karen posted. But I did not want to discourage alternative speculations, since it is still somewhat obscure.....Congrats on the grub!

On the decency topic, technology is soon to bring up the subject. Do you remember the old Burger King commercials with the ad commanding everyone to "eat a pita!".
They pulled the commercials after a short time, obviously due to the sexual connotations of "eat a pita (peter)", a reference to fellatio. Well, petabytes are soon to be as common to our lingo as megabytes. How will mankind survive?
