Thomas would be livid if he heard how Moslems are talked about here in Fairfax, especially around the courthouse. They have a terrible reputation for dishonesty, lying under oath and presenting false evidence.

I once represented an Afghan man I thought I could trust. He lied to me repeatedly for months. He was accused of renting out rooms in his house as apartments. I went to his house twice to be present during County inspections, and there was no evidence that he had divided his house into apartments. So I was happy to defend him, until on rebuttal the county produced dozens of surveillance photos showing him and his crews removing furniture before the county inspection, and putting it back afterwards. Beds, stoves, refrigerators.

They also brought in a woman who he swore was his sister. She testified that she rented an apartment from him and was not related - she was Hispanic! He lied to my face and told me she was his sister. The gall!

Not only did he lie under oath, but his mother and his father and his wife and his son did, too.

I was so ashamed. I wanted to crawl under the table. But thank goodness the judge and the county attorney could tell that I had been fooled.

That's the worst example, but I have seen it many, many times. My first exposure was during a personal injury case. I was interviewing a witness, an Iraqi cab driver, whether the light was green or red. He asked me which one would be better for my client!!!!! I rented an office from a lawyer who represented a lot of Middle Eastern cab drivers - his secretary was the world's biggest liberal, but she learned to hate and distrust Middle Easterners. It was really kind of funny to watch her shift mental gears.

I have been told by other lawyers that Moslems do not think it is a sin to lie to a non-Moslem. I doubt that is true, but I can't explain the frequent examples of dishonesty I have witnessed with my own eyes. It's very hard not to be prejudiced.

I have also represented Moslems who were very honest. My best experiences have been with Persians, especially the women. I had one Iraqi client I thought was very honest. So it's impossible to generalize.
