I think many people perform as badly as they can in terms of what they think they can get away with. This, of course, has to do with money and power- and the condemnations of such bad behavior frequently has the smell of sour grapes about it (imo). I did some work with a Greek classics professor who was interested in the Hellenistic family unit. I was working on researching an obscure Greek legal plea, but I got to hear a lot about the Greek family in antiquity, which was much more interesting than what I was working on.
