John, Re: this is really a great marketing scheme, even the AMD faithful can't figure out what the number means

This is only the initial confusion IMO. In some months we will probably discuss the Athlon XP on its model numbers not clock-speed. I agree that the rating has many potential problems and will confuse some customers but it's not that AMD is brain-dead by introducing it. It has certainly its advantages. And since -- according to company sources -- HP, Compaq and Fujitsu-Siemens will adopt the new rating, at least OEM support will be there. And that's the most important accomplishment for it to achieve its goal IMO.

OK, I have a new theory: it is based on a linear average of Athlon Thunderbird and Pentium 4 performance...

RE:"Imagine how crystal clear this will be to Mr. Average Joe Consumer. "Mr. Consumer, this number is a derivative of the MHz of a thunderbird divided by a P4 and multiplied by Jerry Sander's street address"."

Exactly what was expected .... now get some advises about performance before buying....

I think that Quantispeed Number + Chtuzpah (tm dhellman) is a good way to describe it
