RE:"Relatively open immigration policies is one reason why our economy does so much better than others.
The more we close our borders the more we hurt ourselves.
Fallout in the form of tighter immigration policy and more difficult international trade will influence our stock market and Intel a whole lot more than an airline bailout or other more obvious but shorter term consequences."

Sounds good but I don't really believe it. 'Cept maybe as a result of an increased influx in population.
OTOH, I'm not for closing the borders but I would like to see them tightened.
What does it say to those legally trying to get entry when you look the other way on illegal border crossings, midnight boat runs from the Bahamas etc...when you can't keep track of 3 million illegal aliens or even want to naturalize them?
What is says to me is that the US can't control it's borders so why bother to try to enter legally?

I suggest you look at some of the immigration policies of other countries...try Australia and New Zealand for instance.

Jim

GV, <Relatively open immigration policies is one reason why our economy does so much better than others.>

I remember a case a year ago where Portland INS detained this Chinese lady for several days in a jail for no apparent reason. That as well as other stories of a heavy-handed INS was cited as a reason why international business people are reluctant to fly to Portland and do business here.

Kind of sucks how INS detained the honest businesswomen and businessmen, but failed to catch cold-blooded mass murderers who thought they had a one-way non-revokable ticket to heaven.
