I'll add a bit more info. Intel's guidance for the third quarter (which ends today) was (this is drawn directly from Sept 6. Intel press release):

"Gain (loss) from equity investments and interest and other is expected to be a net loss of $90 million, lower than the previous expectation of zero, due to lower than expected realized gains from the sale of equities."

Still, if you look around at other corporate investment programs Intel looks better than most. Regarding unrealized investment losses - its pretty hard to determine exactly where these things stand until you have an event that allows you to peg the value. I'm not sure speculation is useful.
