economic productivity measures how productively we use dollars.

unit productivity measure how productively we make stuff.

micron is a great example of where unit productivity explosions lead to economic productivity implosions. micron's unit productivity increases 100-200% a year. the dram guys are so unit productive they will drive some big players out of business.

unit productivity doesn't lead to better living standards. economic productivity does. sometimes they move together, sometimes they don't (mu as a prime example).

why does this matter? some folks say they *know* economic productivity (the productivity that increases standards of living) went up b/c the anecdotal evidence is that unit productivity has increased. they don't need proof, they just *know* it.

of course, economic productivity didn't go up as much as they thought b/c gdp didn't pick it up (it wasn't there!). so, the unit productivity improvements enabled by computers were somehow offset... by what? who cares? let's just rig the numbers to create a "new economy."

this is the mistake that led alan.com to rig the numbers in the first place. he destabilized the american financial system by misleading the world. the piper is now walking down wall street.
