No trend can go on endlessly. Whether it is stocks or real estate or beanie babies or baseball cards -- all trends come to an end. The same with globalization. It was a trend that was on track for such a long time that people simply extrapolated it all the way to the future and the thereafter. What we are facing here might be a moderate blip but people are not prepared for any rocks on the road. It can never be a smooth ride all the way.
