This is not face-saving. This is butt-saving.

There is no win-win here, re the Taliban. There are no courthouse steps, no mid-trial. This is not litigation.

Everyone in the region detests the Taliban (including, almost certainly, bin Laden and those who have used them to further their own agendas), and detests them with absolute, clear-headed good reason. There is absolutely nothing to be gained by keeping them in power just because they suddenly say they've had a change of heart. On the other hand, there is a lot to gain by removing them from power and replacing them with a government more conducive to co-existing with other nations in a modern, civilized world. Destroying them will unleash nothing but a flood of gratitude from the Afghani people they have brutalized.
