When people came to computer science and said that Java thin clients were going to replace and make obsolete computer programs -- I laughed. I said, how is this initiative any different than BASIC or Pascal, the previous generation "ideal languages". The fact is that superstring theory is quaint and hot these days, but has yet to be proven to be anything but theory. Talk to the diffactive optics guys at LLNL and they will humble you. You can make femtosecond pulses from macroscopic diffractive optics using chirped lasers. You define the ULTIMATE experiment to prove superstring and I'll get the people to build your optics to measure it or cause it to happen.
