FWIW, I heard a lengthy story several days back on NPR about option trades in many of the major airlines, including UAL and American. I doubt seriously that the issue has been overlooked. The unusual nature of the open interest and the trades you are talking about were discussed in detail, with interviews of experts, officials, etc.
