Crackdown on SIMI activists continues, 150 arrested

New Delhi,Saturday, September 29, 2001: The nationwide crackdown on the outlawed Students Islamic Movement of India (SIMI) continued for the second day with over 150 activists arrested today taking the total number to 450 even as its Secretary General Safdar Nagori and some state level leaders remained elusive as bank accounts of some its units were frozen.

Offices of the radical outfit banned on Wednesday were sealed across the country amid reports that some of its leaders had gone underground to evade police arrest.
No incidents of violence were reported today as a fallout of the ban. There was a general improvement in the situation in Lucknow marked by relaxation of curfew in areas where it was imposed since Wednesday night following police firing on clashing SIMI activists. Four people were killed in these incidents.
Maharashtra was among the states with maximum number of arrests with about 70 activists detained so far.
The ban on SIMI for a two-year period continued to come under attack from several Muslim organisations alleging that it was an attack on Islam and done with an eye on the fothcoming assembly elections in Uttar Pradesh.
"The ban on SIMI is a direct attack on Islam," said senior Jamaat-e-Islami leader Syed Ali Shah.
