Windsock, Re: I was not aware that Spec scores were given in IPC. Where do they do that?

There is a 1.4 GHz Athlon and there is a 1.4 GHz P4. The 1.4 GHz Athlon beats the 1.4 GHz P4 in SPECint (base on par, peak better) but loses in SPECfp (by 25%). So it has better a IPC for integer operations and worse for floating point. You can expect the SPEC scores to go up roughly 20% with Athlon XP and KT266A clock-for-clock (we already have SPEC scores that shows that a Palomino is 11% faster in SPECint and SPECfp compared to a Thunderbird with the same clock-speed, KT266A will add another 10%). However, overall the P4 will still have the lead in SPEC. If you don't believe my calculations, just wait another two weeks to be sure. I am sure AMD is eager to post these new scores. If you want to check out the old scores from AMD and Intel that were already posted, please read my original answer to Elmer or go to the official website.
