Some people say it's because there are more politicians than warriors housed down at the Pentagon. Lord knows that relatively few of the gruff, no-nonsense, "tell it like it is, don't care if you don't like what I have to say, not going to kiss your @ss", officers ever make general. They just ruffle too many political feathers.

For better insight into this. I'd suggest reading Colin Powell's book. He talks about the old army and the new army. In the old army, if you goofed up, you would catch hell from your CO. He would make you wish you were dead. BUT! Nothing would go down on your permanent record. Now with the "new army" that is now "more humane" and "sensitive". If you goof up. Your CO does hardly anything. BUT... Every little infraction goes down on your permanent record.
As a result. We end up with people leading our army who make sure they stayed out of anything resembling trouble. They never did anything. So they couldn't goof up. They're the ones who spend all their time pointing their fingers at others blaming everything on them. They accept no responsibility...they do nothing...they never made any mistakes.
Let me sum this up in a quote from Colin Powell: "Nobody ever makes it to the top without screwing up." He said that on personal experience. I'd much rather have the one who will stick his neck out...do things...and make mistakes along the way.

What you say is very true, and I guess we have to give them credit for what they probably prevented in the past and we will never know of.

U.S. News & World Report: Finger-pointing, fingerprints - The hunt for evidence and, hard on its heels, charges about who screwed up

Hi Hawk,

Here's some more discussion of what went wrong with our security measures. Listening to the news lately, I'm coming to the conclusion that we are still suffering from an inundation of false bomb scares, packages left in odd places, etc. Some portion of which appears to be a continuing effort to monkey-wrench the system. We have no completely workable defenses against this sort of grinding on our productivity and way of life.

What would a workable resolution of the Israel-Palestine impasse look like?
