I signed up with VZ about 1 year ago, mainly to get a Qualcomm 860, since I figured it would be the last chance to get one. If I liked the service, I planned to continue. I have carried the phone with me over much of SoCal and found they have coverage in most places. I travel along the San Andreas Fault in some rather remote areas and there is no coverage there, but that is not a surprise. About one house every 10 or 20 miles. With the recent plans offering lots of minutes and free Long distance, I kept the VZ account and also got a Sprint account to compare service, mainly since we have a need for lots of LD service now.
Vodafone seems to think they control VZ and will move them to WCDMA in the US. This will require new spectrum, which I do not think they will get. I worked in that area for some time and getting spectrum from DoD for even short periods of time was difficult. If they are using this spectrum to control satellites, not much chance of changing bands, not easy to make a service call to change the RF parts in a satellite. Sprint does not seem to have such delusions of new spectrum so I decided to support them.
Sprint does not seem to have as much coverage but does cover the areas I need. The signal seems to be weaker than the VZ signal at the same place ( my house) even though the Sprint and VZ towers are about the same distance away. It seems be due to the difference frequencies, 800 Mhz for VZ and 1900 Mhz for Sprint. I went to the two cell towers right after getting the Sprint phone, trying to see which tower was which. I found a group at one tower and talked to one of the guys. He was a salesman for cell towers and was there with a group from Cingular, who is planning to add towers. The towers are owned by a group that sells space to anyone, Sprint and ATT were on that tower. VZ was on a tower about one block away.

No Sprint store near here, but nice stores for Cingular and VZ about 3 blocks apart. Not sure how they pay the rent at Cingular.

Yes, in the early 90s it was fun to compare operators,
signal strengths, etc, and in Helsinki one sometimes had to
call more than once during peak hours.
