S&P is ranges 6-18 for 95%, ususally 12-14 - Points to remember -

1) Watch out for the E - earnings - Mid year estimates to 2002 S& P earnings were $55, current best estimates are around $40 and this is dropping. I think Ed Yardeni has a web site with these estimates from mid year.

2) Previous historical number had fewer accounting games. Serious questions about the quality of todays earning figures.

3) Think about what 2003 earnings will be in an age of massive over capacity..... could they be 10-15% less than 2002 ?

Herman Miller sold the popular Aaeron chairs to lot of dot coms for $600 + . Now you can get them from auctions for $250 down to $170. Herman Miller isn't selling many chairs these days. Same thing can happen to autos, industrial equipment, etc.

Consider bonds. ;-)
