The former USSR didn't lose to Afghanistan as much as they lost the "battle in Afghanistan". They were soundly defeated by the USofA in the Cold War of which Afghanistan was one of many battles lost that wore them down.

In some of these former Soviet states that are now Muslim, you can almost see how they would blame the USofA for their ills and be looking for ways to get even (such as trying to get nukes from their former comrades).

The problems Russia and the former states of the USSR are having were not seen in Japan or Western Europe as the USofA helped rebuild these governments after we defeated them in WW2. This was not the case with the cold war where the defeated were left to rot and the worst of the mold has risen to the top.

Scary World... but I remain hopeful and optimistic.
