i'm not sure what gave you that idea (unless it was the quip about being "less pathetic" than the Barron's piece). Malkiel, as an academic, should be expected to maintain at least a semblance of intellectual honesty that cannot be expected from wall st. hucksters. he knows very well that a 35 year sampling has no statistical significance, and the arbitrary cutoff in front of the larger sampling (which would include at least the past 75 years, instead of 35) just happens to coincide with the point where the model breaks down. not to mention that the market going forward is IMO unlikely to have earnings equivalent to a 22 PE.
