What do you mean by "successful"

I was using the word in the same way we use "successful" in evolution, in which context successful and superior are, for all practical purposes, the same thing.

Other things that have swept the world (depersonalized to avoid baiting anyone into reaction mode):

Radiation from Chernobyl
The Plague
AIDS
Rats
Zebra Mussels
Russian Thistle

Successful, widespread, ubiquitous or most prolific (superior) is clearly not the same as "desirable to us" (whoever the US is that is making the observation of same). Russian thistle is probably pretty happy with its state.

Would those Zebra Mussels that are clogging water distribution systems rather be dead because they are causing us harm? I don't think so.

Religion has always been a fertile ground for producing zealots. But zealots don't need a particular religion - they'll make up their own if they can't find one weird enough for them.
