When you put it that way, I have to agree with you. Granting that the work of evil genius was almost totally successful comes off as some kind of sick admiration. No way do I admire them, but you are dead right. Their motives, however, seem irrational to me. I guess that's what I meant.

How can you say they are irrational when the planned for months and successfully pulled off the biggest crime in history with almost total success.
