With my aging brain I try to keep track of what smart people have said by remembering certain quotes. Once I remember them, the rest, or a lot of the rest, usually falls out. Ever hear this one? Rouseau: The problem of freedom is reconciling what self-interest prescribes with what rights permit. That seems to put the goals of society where we want them to be. But even here we have to be careful. Rights are gifts we give to each other and we, as a society, can take them away in a heartbeat -- which of course in light of what everybody now calls "recent events" is what the ACLU is so worried about. So society, by definition, can't have the last word. Another good quote which I'm sure you're familiar with Walt kelly/POGO: We have met the enemy and he is us.
