Hewlett-Packard and Intel give away computer systems to universities

Sep 27, 2001 (TELECOMWORLDWIRE via COMTEX) -- Hewlett-Packard Co (HP) and Intel
Corp have chosen 40 universities worldwide that will receive HP servers and
workstations based on Intel's Itanium processor as part of a joint USD2.5m
initiative by the companies to support university research.

Under the Itanium-based Systems Grant programme, the universities will receive
HP Workstation i2000 and HP Server rx4610 products. The selected universities
included ten in Europe, five in the Asia Pacific region, four in Canada and 21
in the US. The University of Cambridge was the only UK university on the list.

The universities plan to use the Itanium-based systems for research in areas
ranging from bio-informatics and neural networks to compilers, cluster
computing, computational science and scientific data mining.
