No, you have it backwards. Separatism is much stronger now than it was forty years ago, and the linguistic defensiveness is more marked.

Eric, Well they are actually losing the war for separatism in Quebec because the young are voting with their feet and leaving the province. As the separatist old guard ages it is being replaced by a far more pragmatic group that actively learn English and are thus bilingual.

Yes, would that that were true. But I for one do not actually care whether a single soul learns English in Quebec unless he wants to. All I care about is live free or die. In PQ it is much the same motto, subtly changed to live french or leave.

I realize that I insulted those who wanted to be, and perhaps unwittingly others who have common sense and a sense of fair play in that province. For that I am deeply sorry. I was wrong. I apologize to both of you for that. Bob, Alphonse, I didn't mean it about you two guys who sold lift tickets at Mt. Tremblant, you're ok.
