Assuming the latter, is AMD going to be successful explaining that their mainstream processors demand qunti-names, while their value line is good enough to retain their current naming convention?

It's not a paper launch it's just that AMD hasn't any tier-one OEMs backing Duron left. Just check out how many are using the 1 GHz model currently (hint: none but you can buy it on Pricewatch). Well, that's probably worse than a paper launch.
