I don't think you can conclude that from the article you posted, at least not unless you are predisposed to conclude it.

I think the above is the key message in the article. It's not that they're denying the superiority of Western culture, they're objecting to waving it around like a red flag in front of a bull. There's a difference. They just want the guy's remarks back on the reservation because red flags are singularly unhelpful to the mission as the US has defined it. We don't want a holy war between the West and Islam. We want the war to be between all rational, reasonable folks on one side and terrorist, extremist nutters on the other.
