( BW)(CO-WORLD-WIRELESS)(XWC) World Wireless Communications Announces New Automatic Meter Reading Program; Six Utilities Pre-Registered to Evaluate Web-Enabled Technology

Business Editors & High-Tech Writers

GREENWOOD VILLAGE, Colo.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 3, 2001--World Wireless Communications (AMEX:XWC), a leading developer of wireless and Internet systems, technology and products, Wednesday announced a new automatic meter reading program.
Six utility companies have pre-registered to implement and evaluate the full service Internet telemetry system.
World Wireless has developed a low-cost AMR solution for the electric utility industry and will be providing units for evaluation for as many as 12 utilities in the next 30 days. Six utilities pre-registered to be part of the new Program and will be receiving their evaluation kits in the next two weeks.
The kit will consist of a wireless X-Node for connection to the electric meter and an X-Gate, which will gather the data from the X-Node via a wireless connection and place the information on the Internet. Data will be gathered and stored on a World Wireless AMR. Each utility will have password-protected access to its meter data and will have the ability to view and graph on a user selectable basis.
"We are pleased that these utility companies are eager to implement the AMR telemetry system. We are confident that these utilities will find the real-time meter data to be very helpful in monitoring every day usage," said David Singer, chief executive officer of World Wireless Communications.
"Together with our partnership with the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association (NRECA) and Cooperative ConNEXTions, we are continually seeking to enhance our commitment to the utility industry and aid companies to better balance their energy loads."
"The X-traWeb(TM) technology will provide the electric cooperatives and other utilities the ability to monitor electric meters with fast two-way communication using their existing meters. This is essential for electric load management programs and for businesses to monitor their electric consumption," said Dick Stoneburner, chief executive officer, Cooperative ConNEXTions.
The X-traWeb(TM) technology is an open architecture Internet-based system designed for remote monitoring and control of systems and devices. The technology pairs the world's smallest Web server at 1.6KB with an independent gateway and digital spread spectrum transceivers, providing connected devices with real-time access through the Internet.
Greenwood Village-based X-traWeb Inc. was founded in 1998 to develop and market the X-traWeb(TM) system -- an Internet-based product designed for remote monitoring and control of devices. X-traWeb's many applications include security systems, vending machines, asset management, quick service restaurants and utility meters.
More information on X-traWeb(TM) is available at www.x-traweb.com. X-traWeb Inc. is a subsidiary of World Wireless Communications Inc., a leading developer of wireless and Internet systems, technology and products.
