Korean Internet portal Daum Communications and 17 Korean software and services companies have threatened to take Microsoft to court over the launch of Windows XP, the latest operating system release from the Redmond-based software giant.

The Korean firms object to Microsoft’s bundling of online applications, including instant messaging and Internet telephony, as part of Windows XP.

"We are expressing deep concerns about Microsoft's attempt to disrupt the market by selling Windows XP bundled with a variety of application software," the complaints said in a statement. "We officially demand it immediately stop such efforts."

The group is threatening to go to the courts to stop the sale in Korea of Windows XP, to be launch worldwide on 25 October. Daum has already filed a complaint to the Korea Fair Trade Commission seeking action against the launch of Windows XP.

Opposition is also being voiced in the US, where many see Microsoft’s bundling of software as the same practice that brought about the Justice Department’s antitrust case in the first place. <<
