To: Nittany Lion who wrote (4569 ) 10/2/2001 1:59:38 PM From: MythMan Respond to of 11146 Paterno press conference recap -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1. Football is much more fun when you're winning, but as long as the team is playing hard, Joe is ok with that. He feels that the team played hard and that Iowa was a pretty good team. He's concerned only with whether the team is improving from week to week and getting better. He understands that the fans are concerned and they should be, but Joe doesn't look at things the way the fans do. 2. Mills has played well enough to merit consideration to be the starter even if Senneca is healthy. Matt hasn't practiced yet this week. If he can practice, he will start and have to assume a leadership role or Zack will pass him by. Matt did well when he was in there as did Zack. This week's starter will be determined by who practices best. 3. Joe has no answers as to why we can't run the ball well. Teams are using defensive schemes that force PSU to throw more than they would like. You have to be able to throw to your wideouts and they have to make big catches. No one is going to let PSU run the ball until we prove we can hurt them with the pass. 4. There are a lot of young kids pushing for playing time. You'll see more play this week than last week. You will see more freshmen and redshirt freshmen out there than Joe may have ever put on the field at the same time. The young kids that have gotten playing time have done well and they will continue to get more playing time. 5. The 1983 team had a lot of leadership and never got down on themselves. You have to be careful how you evaluate this situation. You have to keep the team together. As long as they don't start bickering among themselves and realize that they have a chance to be good, this team will become a good football team. This team has a lot of kids with a lot of pride who want to do well and they will do well eventually. 6. Michael Robinson has gotten a lot of reps in practice with Matt Senneca hurting. 7. Tim Massaquoi was told by PSU that the coaching staff wasn't sure if he would be a WR or a TE, and that turned him off because he wanted to play WR. PSU was recruiting some WRs that they felt were better WR prospects, so they couldn't make him a promise that he would only play WR at PSU. They couldn't project him to play as quickly as Michigan has. 8. Joe would prefer to let older players start and then work the young kids into the game at an appropriate point. He's not going to specify which players will see playing time on Saturday. 9. Sean McHugh is a really good athlete. He catches the ball well, he's tough, he's smart. He and Jefferson are excellent prospects and both are big enough to put them up on the line. Sean will get better as they go along. 10. PSU has some people that want to do so well and are so emotionally charged that they make mistakes early in the game. One of these days, the players will get onto an even keel and will be fine. 11. The team is practicing well. Joe has no problems with the team. If everyone hangs in there together, this will be a good football team with a fine future. We have to get some people to have more confidence in some things. The only way to get confidence is to have success, and that's tough to have with the quality of the opponents we face. 12. Jimmy Kennedy and Anthony Adams played outstanding against Iowa. Bryan Scott is playing well. Chris McKelvy did a great job, especially considering he was thrown into the starting lineup on Thursday before the Iowa game. There are reasons for optimism, but people will need to be patient. 13. Marquise Walker is a fantastic athlete. John Navarre is not as polished as Drew Henson but he is very poised and is getting better. Hobson and Foote are 2 of the best LBs PSU will play against. PSU tried hard to recruit Hobson, but he was a lifelong Michigan fan. The speed in the secondary is excellent. 14. There are some holes for the RBs, but that 8th guy in the box makes things difficult. Joe thought there were some mental mistakes initially, but after looking at the tape, he realized they were execution mistakes along the line that hurt the running game. We have to eliminate the mistakes like the fumbled safety kick and not being able to punch it in from the 6 yard line with a 1st down. 15. The number of people involved in playcalling had nothing to do with the problems of getting the right people on the field. Because some of the starters are playing special teams as well, it's sometimes tough to let everyone know they're supposed to be out there. 16. In all fairness to the squad, there have been a few calls by the refs that hurt, but good teams overcome that kind of stuff. 17. David Royer has really stepped to the front. Joe challenged him to play better and he has. Joe challenged 18. Sam Crenshaw and Omar Easy both made tremendous plays on the blocks, Easy especially. He made that play all by himself. 19. The missed two-point conversion made things totally different toward the end of the game. If they make the conversion, they don't have to kick the onside kick after the blocked punt. 20. The young kids didn't play before this weekend because they weren't ready. You can't walk into a program and be able to step right in and play. Joe would rather play a kid 2 weeks too late than 1 week too early. 21. It's tough to play 3 TBs. It's debatable whether the staff is being fair to Omar Easy. Easy had his chance. Now it's time for Johnson and McCoo. 22. Tyler Reed has had some problems with assignments. He's not one of the kids who would be ready to step in there and play. That could change before the season's over. 23. Tim Johnson is trying to get back into football condition and into a comfort zone at LB. He's not ready to play yet. 24. Schmitt will be out at least 3 weeks with mono. 25. The staff still scripts plays for the beginning of the game. The offense hasn't looked bad early in games. They just seem to make mistakes that kill drives. 26. We'll find out if this team has the kind of leadership that is needed to turn this season around. 27. They tried to get the ball to Eddie Drummond more. He had a couple of opportunities that he didn't convert. They need to get him the ball in space more often. 28. Joe won't play a freshman unless he feels they will play a significant amount of time. Reed and Rush aren't ready to be able to play a lot, but there are 4-5 true freshmen who are ready and will play a lot. Redshirting decisions are very difficult. Each player has a lot of input into whether they redshirt or not. For instance, Joe wanted to redshirt Shamar Finney, but Finney wanted to play. 29. Jimmy Kennedy really gutted it out in the 2nd half and made some great plays. Joe will know later this week if Kennedy will be healthy enough to play on Saturday. 30. Lloyd Carr is an outstanding coach and he has a good, solid, well balanced football team. PSU will have to play really well just to be in the game. When you're looking at Foote and Hobson, you're looking at NFL players. Their secondary has 6-7 really good players and all of them have tremendous speed. 31. Gould will probably be the starting kicker. Joe has to sit down with Kimball and find out whether he wants to compete or not. (OUCH!)
