Bush has promised that the U.S. wouldn't attack any Arab country as part of its campaign against terrorists behind the Sept. 11 attacks, Jordan's King Abdullah II said Monday. Abdullah said the promise came during his White House talks with Bush on Friday. "I had a promise from the American president that there will be no strike on Iraq or any other Arab country within the framework of retaliating for the terrorist attacks on the United States or holding the Arabs responsible for these operations," Abdullah said in an address to soldiers. His remarks were carried by the official Petra news agency. While condemning the attacks on New York and Washington, many Middle East leaders have cautioned against a hasty U.S. retaliation, apparently worried that Arab nations, like Iraq, may be targeted. The U.S. has accused Osama bin Laden, the Saudi dissident, as the prime suspect in the attacks, and warned Afghanistan's Taliban rulers who are sheltering him to hand him over. Iraq has denied any involvement in the attacks, but President Saddam Hussein has warned that the U.S. may use the terrorist attacks as an excuse to hit his country. Iraq is already subjected to almost routine U.S.- British airstrikes for repeatedly challenging allied air patrols of two "no-fly" zones in southern and northern Iraq, set up after the 1991 Gulf War. Abdullah said he also discussed with Bush a swift resolution of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict. Arab moderates, like Abdullah, believe that resolving that conflict would restrain Muslim militants worldwide and contribute to international stability. Like other Arabs, the king favors the establishment of an independent Palestinian state with its capital in traditionally Arab east Jerusalem. Israel seized that part of the city in the 1967 Middle East war and claims it as the capital of the Jewish state. (END) DOW JONES NEWS 10-01-01>>>
