You may well be correct, especially as regards what people consider essential rather than optional.

And, yes, as someone who recently had to spend over $100,000 to put a daughter through college, I know there has been inflation in certaina areas.

I am not as confident as you are that people will want to protect themselves from inflation by buying gold. You have to have a lot of inflation before there is a flight from currency. And I am concerned that the production of gold could quickly catch up with any demand. For that reason I hold less than 5% of my net worth in gold. Sometimes I wish I had taken that 5% and built another bathroom. I am not personally acquainted with a single other American, among the hundreds I currently know, who owns any important amount of gold--anything more than maybe one coin.
