"....voluntary time off without pay has been encouraged at several sites..."

Now _that's_ an employee I really want working for me!

An employee who is unessential enough to take time off without pay is an employee who probably shouldn't have a job when he tries to come back.

We used to have a motto when I was at Intel: "If you do your work, you get more work. If you _don't_ do your work, you get more people."

For at least 10 long years there was no economic downturn to speak of in the chip business....a minor blip with the so-called Asian crisis, another blip with the Taiwan earthquake, but, basically, for more than 10 years the employees hired after 1988 or so had never seen any kind of downturn. What, me worry?

There's going to be a bloodbath if things don't turn around very soon.
