The 15 people who have worked full time or most of their time on Contentville who will be laid off will receive all of the severance due them. Because, as you know, Contentville is a separate entity with separate partners and financing, these are the only people affected. Much as I might like to hang the demise of Contentville on the economy or the dot com economy or even September 11, the simple reality is that although those were factors (and certainly factors in the timing) these are not the ultimate cause of our inability to continue. For we had ample, unstinting support from our financial partners and our media partners; we never depended the way lots of dot coms did on being able to print money by going public before we had a viable business; and we staffed and spent leanly from Day One. Rather, despite the great work of the Contentville staff and the great support we had from our partners, my idea for Contentville just didn’t work. We should be proud of how hard we tried and the quality of what we tried to produce.
