French TV did run stories of former French citizens stuck in USSR till the early nineties. One of those guy, quite an old man has his story to contribute.
He was arrested for fighting on the wrong side of the conflict and was heavily sentenced in some camp north of Moscow.
In the eighties, life was more bearable, and he (they) were sometimes allowed to wander about the camp, to get food. As they had no money or anything else they couldn't escape. Once he came by a small car (the typical 2 horsepower Citroen ) with an F registration letter. He stopped the couple and asked for help.
The story should end here, right ? Well it didn't.
The couple happened to be young idealists that believed in the communist doctrine, so they went to warn the police in the next town.
The guy was arrested gain, and released only in the early nineties.
His interview was conducted in Russia ; because he was too old and worn out, he didn't feel like going back to where no one knew him any more, and had almost forgotten his native tongue.
