"What the hell was Reagan spending all those billions on defense in the mid and late 80's.....especially on the Starwars program? Damn, its galling...all that $$$ wasted just to placate someone's paranoia."

You are looking at it wrong. According to Keynsian economics, government spending is more efficient as an economic stimulus than spending in private hands. Yeah, I know that officially Laffer economics was in and Keynsian was out, but when you examine actually policies, you realize that Reagan talked one game, yet practiced another. Reagan pretty consistently did that, as Governor of California he preached local control and would up creating the perfect Welfare State...

In short, that spending that you decry was to stimulate the economy. Which it did. Now the money spent did not have as much of an immediate stimulus as the previous model did. Because the money was concentrated in the hands of the affluent, it tended to be invested instead of immediately being spent on low margin goods, as welfare recipients tend to do. As a result, that spending fueled the stock market, as opposed to directly fueling the economy.

TheJerk,

Re: "Damn, its galling..."

Here's another one that will get your "temperature up" -->

Justices suspend Clinton from Supreme Court

"Though the justices' order was routine, arising from the Arkansas Supreme
Court's suspension of Clinton's law license this year, it nonetheless marks
the first time a president has been disciplined by the court. It also
serves as another reminder of the Monica Lewinsky sex scandal as Clinton
works to repair his image during his first year out of office.

But the article does offer this solution -->

"Even if Clinton were removed from the rolls, he may ultimately be able
to return to the nation's highest court. Under its rules, anyone who has
practiced for 3 years in a state court, with no disciplinary actions
during that time, may seek admission. Conceivably, Clinton could fulfill his
5-year Arkansas suspension, then build up a clean record and reapply."

That "clean record" could be difficult ... ROTFLMAO. "Rhodes Scholar" indeed. <ggg>

Make It So,
Yousef

He swears that the CIA reported to Reagan as early as 1983 that the then Soviet Union was crumbling. What the hell was Reagan spending all those billions on defense in the mid and late 80's.....especially on the Starwars program?

1 - The CIA reports differnt things at different times, and it is not the only voice in these things. The Pentagon and probably the NSA have a voice as well, and somtimes there is a "alternate view" from the CIA presented if it has a lot of support but not enough to get accepted as an offical view.

2 - The spending helped assure that the Soviet Union would crumble rather then pull out of it.

3 - The spending helped us to be prepared incase they got violent as they crumbled.

Tim

Perhaps you've forgotten our overwhelming defeat of Iraq in the Gulf War with minimal casualties.

There you go again.
