if God were that smart, emphatic and loving, as people assume, she would ban the other chromosome and let women take over.

If "all the man wants is sex" and he doesn't want to wait, he won't use a condom, and he won't wait for the woman to put in a diaphragm or foam, either. And if the woman is ignorant, she's not going to remember to take her pill every day. So what difference does it make whether the Pope says it's ok or the Pope doesn't say it's ok, your argument is that Latin America is populated by ignorant savages - I guess the only solution is sterilization.

I am familiar with the argument - I've known a lot of people from Latin America - I think it's sad that after all these years, nothing has changed.

The vast gap between educated Latin Americans and poor Latin Americans is due, in large part, to class distinctions made by the upper classes. Your words reveal more of that than you probably realize. Latin Americans are as class-bound as Brits. Worse, because lower class Brits can all read and write and have fairly decent jobs and living conditions.

Your feelings about the Catholic Church and mine are irrelevant to the fact that the people you describe love the Church and want to follow its tenets. And it's also irrelevant to the fact that the Church is *not* going to change just because you think it's backwards. So if you want to solve the problems, you have to work within that framework.

I don't really think that upper class Latin Americans actually want to get their hands dirty helping the poor. They'd rather complain to each other about "these people."

DJ- I can't think of anything more relevant to "Booms, Busts and Recoveries" than the potential contributions that can be made by the wretched of the Earth, if only someone helped them to achieve their potential by teaching them to read and write and building roads for them and clinics and sewers and water treatment plants and all the other basic things you and I take for granted.

Yeah, yeah, the US will be along to do it eventually. Right now we're kind of busy elsewhere. My grandmother was a Peace Corps volunteer in El Salvador for many years.
