"the Arab world" With 1 billion people of the Islamic faith on this planet, we cannot afford to allow our own ignorance of Islam to generate a whole generation of Americans who hate and fear people of this faith -- although I do not deny the importance of oil, Islam will be around a lot longer than our fossil-fuel economy.

>> Exactly, and "the reality of the situation" with regard to the Arab world is that we are simply not in a position to ignore it as long as we require their oil. <<

this feeble argument is used to justify our intervention in the middle east. of course this intervention is costing thousands of american lives. how do you know that if we were not supporting israel right now and we didn't have troops in the middle east, that we couldn't use allying with israel as a bargaining chip to keep the oil flowing? we could simply tell the arabs that we are not going to take sides in their holy war as long as they sell us plenty of oil. if they try to cut off our supply, we side with israel and protect our oil interests. do you think they would refuse to sell us oil? if all they want to do is destroy israel, and the u.s. was not supporting israel, do you think they would want to encourage us to side against them? i think not. i think they would want to fight one holy war at a time (israel) and they would continue to need our dollars to do it (sell us oil).
