They would have won 10 games with Flutie at QB, just like they did when he was starting there. If you're saying they wanted to intentionally tank this season to get a high draft choice, that's a pretty bold assertion.

I think they took Johnson because he's younger and they'd look ridiculous releasing him after giving him that dumb contract.

As Bill pointed out, Flutie would have won you 10 games last year and gotten you into the playoffs. He would also have very likely beaten the Titans in that infamous playoff game. (Remember Johnson had 60 yards total offense in the 1st half of that game).

Flutie is getting older. There is no dispute in that. The only thing that keeps him playing is very likely the fact that he wants to earn the respect of the establishment which has always discarded as not being a "prototype" QB because of his stature. He may possibly have one more season left in him.

The fact is that Johnson will never win you games. You can not rebuild a franchise around a loser, no matter how good he looks in tights. The Bills should have recognized that fact. they should have kept Flutie and drafted a younger QB which would have learned from watching Flutie play. Two years from now that QB would replace the teacher. This is what San Diego has done. Brees will eventually take over the quarterbacking spot and possibly carry the Chargers to greater heights.

The Bills with Johnson, on the other hand, will be looking for a new qb in a year or two. That means that the team will still be rebuilding while the Chargers are heading for championship seasons.

Now that is a logical decision!
