"I was talking about the defense build up in general not just SDI. I support the idea of SDI but I agree that SDI would not have helped protect the US in the 80s, and still can't in 2001 but I think in 2010 or 2015 it might be different."

Like everything, one needs to spend money up front, even if success is not guaranteed. This does eventually lead to multiple other benefits (both militarily, and even mnore likely commercial).

There are multiple examples where defense spending has lead to other benefits that were not foreseen at the time.
