Dear Tench:

Get off of it! Intel does not have a single part in the P4 that runs at 4GHz. They do have two 2 GHZ pipelines 180 degrees out of phase. That does not mean that the combined runs at 4GHz! Taking your thinking to the extreme, a 2.4GHz cellphone has 720 channels at 2.4GHz, thus by your reckoning, it should be called a 1.728THz device. No one else calls it that. Those so called half cycle uops still take a full stage to execute. And Intel does have 1.5 cycle uops, look at multibit shifts and rotates in their optimization guide, if you do not believe me. A single shift or rotate turns off the phased portion pipeline for a stage or more. P4 can't even do more than one shift or rotate per cycle unlike Athlon which can do 3 in a single cycle.

Since only a few uops can start on half cycle boundary, they actually are delayed by a half cycle before proceeding down the phased pipe, those half cycle uops are actually 1.5 cycle uops. That is what has got you to think they were 0.5 cycle ones, when they were a 1.5 cycle, then a bunch of 1 cycle stages and finally a 1.5 cycle stage where the original does 2 cycles to get them back into sync to be retired by the same scheduler.

That system would never be called a double frequency section except by someone who does not know what they are talking about. It may sound good, but it is not true. What do you expect from marketing morons?

Pete

Tenchusatsu,

You might be on to something. Do you think MENSA allows membership to people with quanti-IQs? <g>
