It's been a while since I've read the auto rags regularly, but Car & Driver and Road & Track used to print some relatively heavy stuff there. Torque & power curves vs. RPM were commonplace. The gearhead crowd predates the geek crowd by many years. Unfortunately for the gearhead crowd, the geek crowd has taken over the engine compartment, so it's a lot harder to tweak things than it used to be. Fortunately for everyone else, automotive things are tremendously more reliable than they used to be. I got a '93 minivan (not the most reliable car by reputation), 95k miles, and it's been in the shop exactly once.
