The result of what you are saying is the vaunted "New World Order", where we're more than just the only superpower, we become the world government as well. That's what everyone seems to want. I'm just concerned that it's a bit early, and unfair to us to undertake the world's burdens, when it looks like the American Civil War, on a global scale. That disaster is still with us to this day.

That's the crux of the issue.

a) do we need to "wipe them out". That would be just another holy war on our part, the Crusade, as GW put it, not accidentally. Suicide isn't exactly a long-term military solution, it's a last-ditch effort. In fact, it's counter-productive, since both sides eventually die or quit for lack of willing recruits. The British entered, and basically disappeared, with only one man returning. Those are the rules of engagement in a holy war.

b) do we care about oil ownership? If they can't sell it to us, who can they sell it to? Think about that for a moment. In California they dropped 17% energy use in a month without reduction in productivity. In a crash program we can do the same nationally, even more so if your WWIII comparison is valid.

Bottom line: keep letting the leaders of these poor, pitiful, god-forsaken people know that they only have themselves to beat up. That will lower the overal level of violence.

They don't say that they must beat the "great satan" to avoid movies. Their claim is that they want us removed from holy ground. So, fine. It's all yours. Saudi Arabia, see you later. We'll buy oil, as needed, maybe.

Getting involved in other people's holy wars is worse than their civil wars.

c) do we need to be a global police to have peace at home?

Each sovereignty being held hostage by terrorism has a responsibility to counter that, and we are getting evidence, finally, of their willingness to do so. If they want our help, we have to avoid the Palestinian / Israeli hoodwinking. Ever read about the USS Liberty?

We've been like rich idiots in the past, now we have to wise up, and face the fact that we're causing a lot of this by handing out money and arms to insane people with agendas other than the well-being of the US.
