I had the same upbringing. Thankfully I was eventually able to escape the "education" that was foisted upon me by questioning the facts. Once I started doing that the realities quickly became clear.

One valuable lesson learned: NEVER debate religion with a religious person. It is impossible to win because they don't want to believe any other possibilities might exist except what they were taught. It's a waste of time and effort, and creates hard feelings.
