You couldn't get 10 people to agree on what the earnings numbers are. Pro Forma? GAAP? Trailing? Forward? Annualized from last reported quarter? With or without adjustments for employee stock option costs, writedowns of inventory and goodwill, etc., etc.? Do we include the "earnings" of those members of the Nasdaq 100 that are about to be taken off the list, gone bankrupt, delisted, etc.? (You wouldn't want Survivor Bias to corrupt the data, would you?) Sounds like a job for thousands, to calculate all the possible flavors of "PE". Or maybe just get a used CSCO server at Ebay, for $3.95 (shipping and handling not included) to do it.
