"OBL's grievance is that ... our soldiers are on the sacred soil of Saudi Arabia, at the request of its rulers, to protect them from Saddam Hussein. "

Exactly. Get them out. Bye, Saudi Arabia, defend yourselves, and get mercenaries if you need them, of whom there are hundreds of thousands around the world ready to do combat with every weapon imaginable.

Don't drag us into your civil and religious conflicts. We can get oil and its alternatives without killing our civilians to do so.

We've been duped into participating in the niceties of royal perpetuation of their dynasties; that's fine, just not with our blood, use your own, or hired guns. We'd prefer they have a democracy anyway. We'll help them - we'll send the democracy training manual, voting machines, etc.

In all the other 11 combat situations in the last 50 years it's the same tired routine - get involved with one side or the other, and pay the price, with failing results, and more death and destruction than would otherwise be the case. We are slow to learn that the world needs us more than we need to be involved in their conflicts, regardless of what a few self-interested participants tell us.
