To be honest, I am willing to cut him some slack on this one. I am sure that he meant that he is a "challenging opponent". When we use figures of speech, it is easy to send an unintended message.

He was trying to convey how big this enemy was. He called him a formidable and worthy opponent. He raised him up using those words rather than put him in the punk/thug/slimeball/scum category where he belongs.
