1. japan did very well by doing many of the basics very well. however, there was no miracle outside of financial manipulation. the same as in the US now. japan is much better at the basics now than during the "miracle" years and their economy is in the toilet.

2. interesting re: six sigma. kinda goes to my point that companies use this stuff to advertise (say 95% of what is right) b/c it is easier than implementing it (doing 5% of what is right). a MAJOR deming point was to not use empty slogans (crap on the wall, etc...) so motorola trademarks one! ;-) anyway, i'm sure their trademark is of limited use as six sigma is a common statistical concept.
