Point taken...let me get back to you on that, after I locate one of my references on this topic. I just did a cursory search and have not turned it up. Thanks for your question. I'll get the answer as soon as I can.

<Titanium is far too light - it has a specific gravity of 4.507 while gold is 19.300>

Lead (11.3) has been used for crude "drill and fill" on gold, but it often can be easily detected on the edge or by weight.

Lead works great for silver (10.49) especially the old poured Englehard 100ounce bars.

Thanks, Andrew. I didn't know I'd confused TUNGSTEN w/Titanium. I'm grateful to Eric Charters for pointing out my confusion between the "2 T's" in a private email. Sorry for the confusion.

FWIW, he believes it was a CIA inspired hoax. I have no independent verificaton re: CIA part.

I DISAGREE with his hoax conclusion, simply due to the number of counterfeits found in circulation.

Also, FWIW, on a related counterfeited gold issue:
counterfeited gold coins were routinely purchased by US troops in the Middle East by our easily fooled military personnel who thought they were really getting rarities and bargains. THAT story made the presses. I also don't believe that was a CIA plot.

Again, my apologies to the thread for confusing the "2 T's"
